Why you should never remove the QR code on a new car

When you buy a set of new mugs at Hema, you want to peel off the sticker on the bottom as quickly as possible – and hope that no sticker residue is left behind that will even survive the apocalypse. With a new car you should not blindly remove all the stickers, especially if it is a QR code. Because this sticker can save your life.

The scannable sticker is not there to order a snack and a drink, but for the emergency services. When a firefighter scans the code, all the car’s technical data will appear. This includes things about the engine, battery, fuel tank and airbags. It also contains instructions for rescuers on how to free trapped passengers.

Renault’s QR code

Renault has been using the stickers on all models since last year and calls the system QRescue. You can find the stickers on the front and rear windows. According to the French car brand, QRescue ensures that emergency services can save up to 15 minutes. Renault can also stick some stickers on your car with such a system for older models.

But Renault is not the first to add a QR code for safety. In 2013, Mercedes already placed such a sticker on the inside of the fuel flap and on the B-pillar on the other side of the car. The information from Mercedes also explains how the car can be cut up quickly and safely. For hybrid and electric models, information is also available about the extra batteries and the high-voltage lines in the car.
