We asked the question in anticipation of a relatively elusive answer, but confirmation that Toyota South Africa indeed already had plans to introduce the updated widebody Hilux GR Sport to our market – and was happy for us to break the news – provided an excellent opportunity to follow up our January Performance Shootout issue with what I consider one of the strongest cover stories CAR has seen in a long time. A subsequent conversation with veteran photojournalist and friend of the publication Calvin Fisher after his trip to the Tokyo Mobility show with Toyota subsequently revealed that he had driven the spiritual successor to the Stallion – and almost forgot to tell us.

Another key model set to arrive in South Africa later this year is the all-new Renault Duster. Yes, in overseas markets it wears a Dacia badge, but if anything it’s the rugged charm associated with this Renault, Romania-built vehicle that has increased the appeal of this compact SUV over the years .

The February issue’s line-up of road tests includes the excellent entry-level Kia Sportage CRDi LX, the mighty-looking Isuzu D-Max AT35 (which reminded me of the time I visited Arctic Trucks in Iceland), the Ford Puma and the new 5-door Suzuki Jimny. While the latter isn’t my cup of tea (particularly due to its compromised open-road manners), it’s impossible to ignore how popular this plucky off-roader continues to be in all markets, including ours.

We also got behind the wheel of the all-new Porsche Panamera, the striking Omoda C5 GT and a new example of a 1973 BMW 2002 tii.

Having successfully added a Star Wars reference to the cover of South Africa’s oldest and most respected automotive publications, my challenge to our sister publication Getaway is to somehow say “This is the way!” on one of his future destination covers…
