Volvo withdraws EX30 from sale as owners get refunds due to software issues

The Volvo EX30 has been withdrawn from sale as the Swedish brand works to resolve serious software issues that have forced some owners to return their cars.

These problems, owners have told Autocar, range from screens going black and steering wheel buttons not responding to cars not charging and even emergency braking systems randomly activating.

Owners have also shared stories and photos online of faulty infotainment touchscreens, incorrectly displayed information (such as time and range), profiles reverting to factory defaults, and failing driver assistance systems.

Some problems have been so crippling that owners have returned their cars to Volvo for full refunds, Autocar has been told.

A Volvo spokesperson responded in a statement: “We recognize that this is not what they expect from their Volvo, and we are working to resolve this as quickly as possible with minimal inconvenience to our customers.”

The EX30 is highly dependent on its software. Most important functions, such as the headlights, exterior mirrors and climate control, can be operated via the central touchscreen.

The electric crossover’s physical controls are limited to window switches, door locks and hazard warning flashers, while steering column switches control drive select, turn signals and windshield wiper operation.

Volvo has informed Autocar that the EX30 has been removed from the online configurator (it is still available from stock) because an update for the 2025 model year is expected on July 8.

Autocar understands that withdrawing the EV from the market is a result of these software problems.

Volvo confirmed that any changes made for the 2025 model year “will be minimal” as software changes can be applied over the air.

This isn’t the first time Volvo, owned by Chinese behemoth Geely, has had problems with the EX30’s software. Before it hit forecourts in February, Volvo withheld samples while major ‘debugging’ software updates were made.
