Volkswagen unveils Golf GTI Mk8.5


The 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8.5 facelift has been unveiled, marking the 50th anniversary of this enduring nameplate. The latest version comes with notable changes, combining improved performance with a fresh design.

Starting with the exterior, the headlights have been updated, with a sleeker profile and distinctive hexagonal DRLs that light up the sides. There is a choice of three headlight configurations, including standard LEDs, a performance option with an illuminated Volkswagen emblem and light bars – a first in Europe. The third option is IQ. Light LED matrix system, also with illuminated badge, with an impressive night range of up to 500 meters.

At the rear, the taillights show a new light signature, with an optional 3D effect for those who choose the IQ.Light system. The front bumper has also changed, with a full-width design for regular Golf variants and added fang-like elements for GTE and GTI models.

Inside, there’s a return to the conventional buttons on the steering wheel, replacing touch controls. Illuminated sliders for the climate system controls add a practical touch, making them easier to find in the dark. The Golf GTI Mk8.5 is now equipped with Volkswagen’s latest modular infotainment system (MIB4) in two versions: Ready 2 Discover with a 10.4-inch central touchscreen and the top version of Discover with a 12.9-inch display.

Accompanying the infotainment screen is a 10.2-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, standard across the Golf range and configurable, with model-specific information profiles for R-Line, GTI and GTE models. A head-up display with projection on the windshield is also available as an option. Under the skin, the GTI’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EA888 engine now produces 195 kW, a significant increase of 15 kW. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.

Volkswagen has expanded the customization options with four new paint finishes: Crystal Ice Blue Metallic, Anemone Blue Metallic, Oyster Silver Metallic and Grenadilla Black Metallic, bringing the total number of color choices to 11. In addition, there is an option for a black painted roof for R-Line, GTE and GTI versions. The update also introduces five new alloy wheels, ranging in size up to 19 inches.
