Fewer new cars were sold in the Netherlands in the first half of 2024 than in the same period in 2023. The car sales of June 2024 are known and so we also know how many new cars were sold in the first six months. There are so far in 2024 exactly 193,617 new cars registered. Last year there were almost 7,000 more.
The decline is mainly due to the sale of pure petrol cars. Last year, a third of new cars had only a petrol engine. This year it is only 23.6 percent. Has the Netherlands become an EV country? No. According to the Bovag and the RAI Association the share of petrol cars has shrunk as manufacturers increasingly offer hybrid models.
This is also reflected in the market share of hybrid cars, which increased from 36.2 percent to 43.4 percent. By the way, the Netherlands is getting closer every year to becoming a plug-in country. In 2023, almost 58,000 new EVs were purchased from January to June. This year there are more than 60,000. There could have been a few more, thinks Huub Dubbelman of the RAI Association: ‘Fiscal uncertainty and the lack of future policy for the use of electric cars have an inhibiting effect on their sales.’
Most sold cars are still electric
Despite the fact that more EVs were sold, electric models are still the most popular. The Model Y and Model 3 top the list. Thanks to these two models, Tesla is once again the best-selling brand of the month. Kia is doing particularly well with the Niro, of which 503 electric models were sold and 639 with a hybrid drivetrain.
At Volvo, the EX30 is still the best newcomer and at BMW they also rely on the smallest crossover/SUV. The iX1 and
