The 2025 Volvo EX90 will not have Apple CarPlay, at least initially

Production of the 2025 Volvo EX90 started in early June at Volvo’s South Carolina plant. Deliveries of the $77,900 mid-size electric SUV are expected to take place in the second half of the year.

However, some important features will not be available initially but will be added later via software updates. Volvo has a list on its customer support website.

One of the features will be the Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring system. Volvo said an update enabling CarPlay is “coming soon” but has not yet given a firm timeline. The EX90 also supports Android Auto and this mirroring system will be available at launch.

Another useful feature that is still missing, but planned for a future update, is Plug & Charge. This means that to charge at public charging points you will likely need a card or app to initiate charging and pay for the electricity.

Volvo said there will also be battery drain in the EX90 when the vehicle is parked, at a rate of about 3 percent per day, but only for three days, after which the vehicle will go into a deep sleep mode to conserve energy. The energy will be used to power the vehicle’s core computer system. The requirement to run the system in the background will be addressed in a future update, the automaker said.

Later, bidirectional charging and smart charging will be added. The latter optimises charging at home, such as topping up during off-peak hours when electricity prices are lower. It can keep track of the owner’s planned departure times, so the vehicle is fully charged when needed.

Other missing features are in the area of electronic driver assistance systems, including cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking.

Volvo hasn’t said why the features have been delayed, but the original start of deliveries for the EX90 – and its Polestar 3 corporate sibling – was also delayed due to software issues. The Volvo was originally set to begin deliveries in early 2024, and the Polestar in late 2023.

Deliveries of the Polestar 3 began on Thursday, with the first customers taking delivery at a special ceremony at Polestar’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. Deliveries in the U.S. will begin shortly after production starts at the South Carolina factory this summer.

Volvo also said this week that it will delay the EX30’s U.S. arrival until next year, citing a changing “global automotive landscape.” The electric subcompact crossover is built in China and was originally scheduled to arrive here this summer, but with the U.S. recently imposing 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Volvo will now wait until production of the EX30 starts at its plant in Belgium, scheduled for next year.
