The fully electric models use 800V technology. In addition, higher-spec versions come with Hesai’s 128-line lidar. According to Leapmotor, 50% of pre-sales are to families with two or more children and 65% are to families with three generations. Deliveries will begin next month with a target of 2,000, rising to 5,000 in August.

Buyers can choose from six colours: Starlight Silver, Starlight Purple, Skylight Grey, Pearl White, Metallic Black and Glazed Emerald. The C16 bears a strong family resemblance to the C10. It has wraparound headlights and a closed grille, but the overall shape is more muscular. It sits on 21-inch wheels.

Inside, the car has a centre-mounted 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. The centre screen has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip that powers features such as 360° surround view and voice control. There’s also a face ID recognition feature. The interior comes in a choice of white, orange or purple.

Rear passengers get a 15.6-inch entertainment screen that folds down from the roof. Second-row passengers get power-adjustable captain-type seats that offer 145° recline, along with heating and ventilation. The small tables that fold down from the back of the front seats are adjustable via voice. Meanwhile, the third row is designed to maximize comfort with a claimed 947mm of headroom and the backrest can be adjusted by 10°. Third-row passengers get a 120mm-wide armrest and there’s USB Type C charging too. Access to the third row is via a 160mm wide center aisle. Apparently the covering is a baby-chewable silicone material! The front and back use double-layer soundproof glass.

Lidar is only on the top models and see the car not only equipped with 128-line Lidar but also an Nvidia Orin X chip. There are 30 sensors in total and theoretically the car can achieve L3 driving assistance.

Range-extended versions use a four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine with a maximum output of 68 kW. The electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and delivers up to 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. The battery capacity is 28.4 kWh. The pure electric range is 200 km (CLTC) and the combined range is 1095 km. The WLTC fuel consumption is 6.19 l/100 km, while with CLTC it is 5.4 l/100 km.

The fully electric version has a 67.7 kWh battery and also a more powerful motor with 215 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque. Maximum range is 520 km. Charging 30-80% takes 15 minutes. It should be noted that the C16 is only available as a rear-wheel drive car.

Currently there is no news whether the C16 will be one of the models offered in Europe. While Leapmotor’s T-series is intended to be the most export-oriented, current plans are to export the C10 to Europe.
