Spy shots of the 2025 Audi Q5 reveal new details

Audi has been caught testing a prototype for a redesigned Q5.

The new third-generation Q5, expected in 2024 as a 2025 model for the US, will be Audi’s last with combustion power, as the automaker has confirmed that only electric vehicles will come to market after 2026.

Some of the earlier prototypes were spotted testing alongside a new A5 Avant wagon that will also be launched later this year. Both vehicles are expected to ride on an updated version of Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, found under the current Q5 and A5, meaning the engines are mounted longitudinally and front-wheel drive is standard.

The new Q5 seems to have a much more dramatic appearance than the somewhat conservatively designed current generation. However, the size seems to be about the same. The resulting design should be similar to that of the Q5 E-Tron launched in China in 2022.

Don’t look for a Q5 E-Tron in the US. Instead, we’re treated to a separate electric SUV called the Q6 E-Tron. It is also in testing and will be unveiled soon, along with a related Porsche Macan EV.

There should also be a redesigned Q5 Sportback. Prototypes for the coupe-like variant should appear later this year.

Expect all powertrains in the new Q5 and Q5 Sportback to be electrified, with mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology paired with four-cylinder or V-6 engines. It’s not clear whether diesel engines will be offered, although they may be in markets where the fuel is still popular.

Production of the Q5 for North America is currently taking place at Audi’s plant in Mexico. This should also be the case for the new generation.
