Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo slaughtered by headlight thieves in Germany

It’s not unusual for parts to be stolen from parked vehicles, but a new case that took place in Dusseldorf, Germany is one of the most brutal we’ve ever seen. Thieves ripped out the headlights of a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, smashing the front fenders and causing five-figure damage to the electric car.

Imagine owning the Taycan pictured and finding it in that condition before heading to work. The “taking out” most likely took place at night, when the vehicle was parked on the street. In their quest to remove the desired items as quickly as possible, the thieves butchered the car with some sort of sharp tool.

Photos of the aftermath were shared on Reddit and attracted widespread attention from Porsche fans who were “traumatized” by the sight of the blinded Taycan. The front fenders are cut in half and the sheet metal is bent, exposing the inside. This violent act is an unconventional way for the thieves to gain access to the headlight wiring, as they cannot properly remove the adjacent body panels.

Interestingly, the thieves took nothing other than the headlights of the Mamba Green Metallic electric car. Even the alloy wheels remained intact, despite being considered an easy target. As you can imagine, the Porsche Taycan’s matrix LED units are quite pricey. In the US, each headlight costs a whopping $4,390, which translates to $8,780 for a new pair.

A Reddit commenter who owns a body shop said that some automakers like BMW make it nearly impossible to swap headlights between different cars by VIN coding them to the original vehicle. We don’t know if Porsche has a similar policy, but an experienced hacker could probably bypass the security block before listing the stolen items on eBay.

As for the now “blind” Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, we hope that the insurance company will cover the repair costs and return the EV to its owner as soon as possible.

RIP Taycan Turismo – brazen headlight theft
