New Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door EV pistols for Porsche Taycan with 1,000 hp

We already knew that Mercedes-AMG was making a high-performance electric car in the form of a four-door coupe, but all we needed to spark our imagination was the sleek 2022 Vision AMG concept. Now we have to wait over as our spy photographers in Germany captured not one, but two prototypes of the electric AMG being tested, albeit heavily cloaked in camouflage.

Each prototype was dressed in different camouflage patterns that covered the entire bodywork. The exterior design seems to be largely inspired by the fascinating Vision AMG concept. The low-slung silhouette and aerodynamic roofline promise a sportier appearance compared to the Mercedes EQS. This is further accentuated by the longer bonnet and pronounced rear shoulders, which hint at the car’s inherent performance ambitions.

The headlights and taillights appear to be preliminary examples, while the retractable rear spoiler appears to be the real deal. Additionally, the lighter camouflage prototype reveals more about the bodywork, without the bulky plastic cladding on the bumpers and hood seen on the black example.

Beyond aesthetics: a powerhouse under the hood

While the final design details remain under wraps, the prototypes offer some clues as to what lies beneath. This electric sports sedan is expected to be the first model to use the all-new AMG.EA architecture, which is specially designed for high-performance, fully electric AMG models. The special platform promises to offer an improved driving experience where both power and agility are paramount.

According to previous reports, the electric four-door model is expected to feature lightweight electric motors from British brand Yasa and a sleeker, high-density battery pack from American Sila Nanotechnologies. With an output reported to be almost 1,000 PS (746 kW / 1,014 hp), it will be significantly more powerful than its plug-in hybrid ICE cousin, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door 63 S 4MATIC+ E Performance, which already features an impressive power of 832 hp. horsepower (620 kW / 843 hp).

A direct challenge to Porsche’s electric supremacy

This electric AMG is undoubtedly Affalterbach’s answer to the Porsche Taycan, the current king among powerful electric sedans, as recently demonstrated by the lap record at the Nürburgring. Expected to hit showrooms in 2025, the electric AMG will serve as the all-electric counterpart to the existing Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door, which debuted in 2018. Thanks to the recent 2024 facelift, the petrol-powered GT 4-Door could possibly continue to be on sale alongside its electric sibling, giving consumers the choice between established performance and advanced electric technology.

The final name for this electric powerhouse remains a question mark. Will Mercedes stick to a variation on the AMG GT 4-Door name, or will they opt for a more distinct and evocative name for this electric sports sedan? We should find out soon enough.
