Hunter EV pickup from ex-Nio maker JAC will be launched in April

The JAC Hunter (Hantu in the Chinese market) EV pickup will make its debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, marking a step forward in the electric truck market in China. The automaker was a contract manufacturer of Nio EVs and is leveraging this experience with the new version of trucks. With a ground clearance of 205mm and a long 1.81m cargo box, the Hunter EV prioritizes functionality and positions itself as an option for those who rely on their vehicles for work and daily activities.

A striking feature is the four-wheel drive with two motors. Most electric pickup manufacturers in China only make their trucks with rear-wheel drive. For example, Great Wall Motor (GWM) makes an electric version of the Poer (Cannon) truck with a single e-motor in the rear axle. This dual-motor setup thus brings the Hunter EV in line with the highest industry standards.

Although the 500 km range is impressive, potential buyers in cold regions have expressed concerns, and actual performance under full load or in low temperatures will likely be the most important factor in attracting potential buyers. Recognizing that the majority of JAC pickup consumers prioritize utility over luxury, the Hunter EV focuses on improving usability.

Previously unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show, the Hunter EV has received some front-end design tweaks for its upcoming debut in Beijing. The now closed grille, mech warrior style face and standout features like flowing turn signals and segmented headlights give it a distinct look. With a length of 5.62 meters, width of 1,965 meters and height of 1.92 meters, supplemented with a loading floor of 1.81 meters, the Hunter EV offers a fairly large loading capacity. The 2-vertical-9-horizontal welded frame with a ground clearance of 205mm helps in adaptability in different road conditions. The visual perspective is enhanced by 18-inch high-alloy wheels not normally seen on work-style trucks.

The interior design is inspired by the Forbidden City, with a horizontally and vertically symmetrical T-shaped structure, creating an apparently spacious driving space. Smooth materials, camel gray brushed trim panels and piano lacquer finished air vents further distinguish the car from your everyday truck. The vehicle has a 7-inch instrument cluster with LCD screen and two UI skins: Eastern Dragon and Arctic Blue Light.

In terms of technology, the Hunter EV comes with the Intelligent InCar 3.0 system, voice control, dual-mode navigation, over-the-air updates, wireless fast charging, 220V power, electric seats, automatic climate control and ambient lighting.

Under the hood, the powertrain features a dual-motor setup, with a combined power output of 70/160 kW and maximum torque of 176/342 Nm for the front and rear motors respectively. The 88.02 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack delivers a CTLC (Chinese industry standard) range of 500 km, positioning the JAC Hunter EV as a potentially favorable choice in the growing electric pick-up market.
