GWM returns to the sedan sector after eight years of drought

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is reportedly working on the 5.5-metre luxury sedan for a new brand codenamed ZX (don’t confuse it with ZX Auto). It will have a NEV powertrain and will compete with the Hongqi, Bentley and Rolls-Royce models. So GWM is back in the sedan sector after an eight-year drought.

Great Wall Motor began producing sedans in the early 1990s. In 2012, GWM launched its latest sedan, a facelifted version of the Great Wall Voleex C50. Production was halted in 2016 due to low demand. In 2020, GWM presented a four-door concept car called Futurist at the Beijing Auto Show. Next year, GWM filed for patent images for the new retro-styled sedan. The spy images leaked online in 2022. But then it disappeared from the grid. Now GWM is once again trying to revive the sedan segment and is working on a luxury product.

GWM ZX sedan

One of the largest Chinese car retailers, Autohome, reported that Great Wall Motor is developing a new luxury sedan for a high-end NEV brand called ZX, citing its sources. It has also shared a first render image of this vehicle. It has a high hood line with a flattened front bumper, large eight-spoke wheels, a low beltline and cameras instead of rear-view mirrors. The vehicle shown does not have door handles.

The body length of the ZX sedan was reportedly 5.5 meters. To be clear, it is slightly shorter than the extended wheelbase Rolls-Royce Ghost. It will also have a NEV drivetrain. It looks like this sedan will compete with Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Hongqi L-series models in China.

No further details about this sedan have been provided. GWM may reveal more information about the ZX sedan this year. But there’s still a chance it will fade into obscurity with retro styling like its predecessor. Currently, Great Wall Motor sells cars under five brands: GWM Pickup, Haval, Tank, Wey and Ora. Previously, this company launched another brand called SAR. But it was discontinued and the sole model, Mecha Dragon, will become part of the Ora brand.
