The days of speculation about electrified versions of existing models like the 488 or 812 are over. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna has confirmed a completely new design, a “fully electric special” according to a Reuters source, that will be unlike anything currently in their line-up. Expect a futuristic silhouette that embodies the essence of a Ferrari, constructed with lightweight materials to optimize performance.

To add fuel to the fire, spy photos taken by Derek Cornelissen reveal a heavily disguised test mule being tested in Maranello, Ferrari’s home base. The strangely disguised prototype resembles an oversized hatchback. While the bodywork resembles a modified Maserati Levante, it intriguingly features headlights borrowed from the Ferrari Roma. New alloy wheels, which may lack the aerodynamic covers, further distinguish the test vehicle.

Production of the upcoming Ferrari EV will take place at the brand’s recently opened “e-building” facility. Interestingly enough, Ferrari has also promised an “authentic” sound for their electric car, the details of which are still a mystery.

The Ferrari EV represents a major turning point for the Prancing Horse. While some may scoff at the idea of an electric Ferrari, the company assures us that this new chapter will not compromise its core values. “We will be Ferrari, even in electric form,” Vigna declared. Only time will tell if this exciting stallion can live up to the legacy of its petrol predecessors.
