  • A new Ford Mustang Dark Horse burned down in April after a clutch failure.
  • The owner spoke to Carscoops and provided dashcam footage of the incident in the car.
  • His experience with Ford was positive and he has already purchased a replacement Dark Horse.

The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse may be a stallion, but this owner’s ride went up in flames faster than a match at a gas station. While driving down the road, they suffered a clutch pedal failure, and soon after, their prized pony car caught fire. They spoke with Carscoops to detail the fiery ordeal, how Ford handled everything, and provide in-car footage of the vehicle as it went up in flames.

The incident happened in April and we initially discussed what we knew at the time. A fire started after the clutch pedal got stuck in the depressed position. It was unclear at the time what would happen to the car, but dashcam footage confirms much of the owner’s story.

The owner, who we’ll call John because he prefers to remain anonymous, says he tried to shift out of fifth gear with the clutch pedal stuck to the floor. Despite reaching down and trying to pry it back up with his hand, nothing seemed to solve the problem.

His daughter, who was sitting next to him, encouraged him to stop. Once he did, the car stopped and John began trying to diagnose the situation.

Again his daughter spoke up and said she smelled something burning. Sure enough, as soon as he opened the hood, he saw smoke. “I called my wife, she called 911. We had nothing to break up with,” he tells Carscoops. “The fire grew and I think it tore the fuel rails because it flashed and turned into a raging inferno.”

That entire experience is captured in the video above. While it might have been a sad end to that particular Mustang’s life, John says Ford exceeded his expectations in the aftermath.

“They bought the vehicle back for 100% plus taxes and reimbursed me for the receipts I submitted for the little things I had done to it like tint, dashcam, front splitter, etc,” he tells us.

The entire process was completed in less than eight weeks and John is now the proud owner of a brand new Dark Horse. That’s seriously fast service from Ford, on top of covering all those extras. If anything, it shows that they really care about keeping their customers happy, even when things go up in smoke.
