What is the Trident?

This 34-foot carbon fiber hulled boat can accommodate up to 10 people and features a bow bed, sink, toilet, freshwater shower to rinse off the water you’ve probably been swimming in, and a refrigerator.

More importantly, it’s electric. It’s powered by four 63-kWh battery packs connected in series for a total pack size of 250 kWh. It runs on a 400-volt electrical system with a maximum charging rate of 200 kW. That can quickly charge the battery from 10-80% in less than an hour.

The electric motors delivered a total of 600 horsepower to two Mercury sterndrives with twin propellers for torque control.

How fast and far does Tridente go?

The top speed is 74 km/h, but the cruising speed is between 45 and 52 km/h with a range of 50 to 69 kilometers, depending on a number of variables.

In a strange twist, the boat had ZipWakes installed, just like my own fishing boat. These are a form of modern trim tabs that sink into the water to create an air pocket that helps level and smooth the ride. When I pointed out that the crew hadn’t turned them on, I was told that they’re only used when necessary, as they add drag. (Seakeepers do something similar, but don’t sink as far into the water, creating less drag.)

Would you like to be on the market? Making and delivering takes about 9 months.

Maserati brought me to Italy to drive the 2025 GranCabrio Folgore electric convertible, but the pretense was that I would also get to experience the Tridente. The experience would have to involve me being behind the wheel. I took the boat for a ride and the immediate hitch surprised a few journalists who were unprepared for the driver to hit him, as a water skier would say. The drivetrain is virtually silent and is absolutely covered by wind noise at high speed.

More importantly, if you, I or anyone else were on the aft sundeck, they would be able to breathe easier. The Tridente doesn’t emit fumes because there’s no gasoline engine. Whether you’re cruising, trolling slowly or just hanging out on the water, there’s no smell.

Everyone at Maserati lobbied for me to get behind the wheel, but the boat attendant looked deep into my eyes and said one word: “insurance.”

Next time Maserati. Next time.

Maserati paid for the travel and accommodation so I could give you GranCabrio driving impressions and drive the electric Tridente. More about the GranCabrio soon.
