The all-electric Toyota bZ7 concept will debut in China, likely equipped with a BYD powertrain

Toyota unveiled a new concept car for its growing bZ range in China on November 15. The bZ7 concept, a pure electric C-class sedan, will likely arrive in production form next year and will compete with cars like the Xiaomi SU7, BYD Han, and Luxeed S7.

The car will likely be a sedan available only in China. Outside China, Toyota has only one fully electric car, the bZ4X, but in China the bZ range is growing rapidly, starting with the bZ3 sedan.

Interestingly, the bZ7 concept appears identical or very similar to the Comfortable Space Concept shown at the Guangzhou Auto Show last year. The car will be produced by the GAC Toyota joint venture and is likely to be launched in 2025.

The bZ7 has a sleek coupe-like shape. At the front there is a closed face with continuous lights. Following this, the rear is also equipped with a transparent rear light.

Internally, the car is believed to be known as Project 630D. In May, GAC Group deliberated and approved a proposal for the GAC Toyota Project 630D. This essentially agreed to proceed with the project and a total investment of 1.588 billion yuan (218 million USD). Previous planning revealed that GAC Toyota planned to launch an all-electric mid-to-large sedan known as Comfortable Space this year. It is believed that the bZ7, Comfortable Space and Project 630D are all the same vehicle.

Currently, the GAC Toyota joint venture sells the bZ3X and bZ4X (sold as Bozhi 4X). The FAW Toyota joint venture, on the other hand, has the bZ3 and bZ4X. The bZ3C will be added to the FAW lineup in the coming months, having already appeared on the MIIT list in September. Although the bZ3X is already listed on the model page of the GAC Toyota website, it won’t be delivered until March.

Both the bZ3X and bZ3C debuted at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year and build on the concepts shown at the 2023 Shanghai Show. Given that time frame, the bZ7 should hit the market in the summer of 2025.

From the bZ3 sedan onwards, Toyota’s all-electric offering in China relies heavily on BYD powertrain technology, using both the Leaf battery and BYD electric motors. This also applies to the bZ3C, and it is very likely that the bZ7 will be the same.

The bZ7 wasn’t the only all-electric Chinese model from a Japanese manufacturer shown at this year’s Guangzhou Auto Show; the Nissan N7 sedan also debuted.
