Pictures have emerged of a near-production version of Jaguar’s electric XJ, the car tipped to lead the brand’s electric reinvention before being scrapped in 2021.
The electric XJ was first shown by the brand in 2019 and was spotted on the road several times in the advanced stages of its development.
But Jaguar only launched the model two years later “after a thorough technology review against the exponential change in the automotive industry” because the car “does not fit our vision for a renewed Jaguar brand”.
Jaguar has never released official photos of the car. The brand has since pushed back its previous 2025 electric-only target by a year – and the concept that will set the tone for its full electric renaissance will be unveiled in just a few weeks.
As Jaguar prepares to unveil that brand-defining concept, photos of the scrapped XJ EV have been leaked, showing the model without camouflage for the first time.

From these images, it appears that the of the XJ was retained.
This form is similar to the electric Jaguar GT, a car that will launch the brand’s transformation in 2026 and something that was previously called an indirect replacement for the axed XJ EV.
Official images of the striking new four-door in prototype form were released last week and show that Jaguar’s £100k Porsche Taycan rival will be a complete departure from recognizable Jaguar styling cues, with straight-line proportions and a long bonnet.
It is the first of three upcoming electric Jaguars that will hit the market by the end of this decade atop a new brand-specific, EV-only platform called JEA. The other two EVs are a large luxury sedan and an SUV.
Before the new era begins, Jaguar has stopped production of the XE, Austria finish. Only the F-Pace will remain in production until 2025 for certain markets, but not for Britain.
