Mainstream Chinese car designs have come a long way in terms of originality; Boring designs perhaps, but clones are few and far between. Companies known for copying, such as Zotye and Landwind, are virtually extinct. Unfortunately, Great Wall Motors continues to release lookalikes: from the Ora Ballet Cat to the King Kong Cannon.
Thanks to the MIIT catalogue, we get a glimpse of the King Kong Canon before its official release. Great Wall used their bling machine and gave the front a lot of chrome; Fortunately, a blacked-out version is available. Of course there are no design influences from Ford or Toyota! 🙂

From the side, the length of the truck offers space for two rows of seats And a long bed; while the wheels look just a little bit underpowered. Not much going on in the back other than the huge GWM “You are here” badge.
At the time of writing, no interior shots are available.
Curiously, there are two 2.0T engines available, one petrol and one diesel; customers also get the choice of a long (3410 mm) or short (3140 mm) wheelbase. Fuel consumption for the gas-powered Cannon is almost 10 l/100 km, while the diesel achieves a more efficient 7.7-8.2 l/100 km. For a relatively large truck, the King Kong Canon should cost around 100,000 RMB ($15,650), quite affordable.

Because pickups in China are more status symbols than work vehicles, payload is not that important; Weighing just 500 kg, the King Kong Cannon won’t replace the Wuling workhorses anytime soon. There is no towing license available, as towing a non-commercial vehicle is illegal without a permit that is difficult to obtain.
GWM really needs to look at what competitors like SAIC are doing to them Taurus demon king (I’m not making this up), it’s original and also has a very nice name!
