The SAIC-backed MG has had relatively slow sales in China of late. Domestic sales volume from January to September 2024 was 56,511 units, down 20.2% year-on-year and down 81.3% compared to the same period of 2022. MG needs a new volume product to attract Chinese customers. It seems like the MG ES5 will look to strengthen the brand’s sales performance.

More about MG ES5

The MG ES5 is a compact SUV that adopts the brand’s latest design language. It has sharp LED daytime running lights and an aggressive front bumper. However, the overall appearance of the ES5 is a bit bulky due to a closed front fascia, wide wheel arches with plastic cladding and a curved hood line. The dimensions of MG’s latest electric product are 4476/1849/1621 mm with a wheelbase of 2730 mm. It rides on R17 or R18 wheels.

MG is very proud of the ES5’s center of gravity, which is only 530 mm. The brand’s officials emphasized that they have achieved such a number because they are the world’s thinnest with a height of 110 mm. The lower center of gravity means better road holding. In addition, the ES5 also has a 50-50 weight distribution on the axles. These are impressive numbers for an urban crossover. The ES5 has a McPherson suspension at the front and a five-link independent suspension at the rear.

The interior of the MG ES5 has a minimalist style. It has a large 15.6-inch floating screen, a 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster and a gear lever behind the three-spoke D-shaped steering wheel. The center tunnel also has a wireless charging pad and a pair of cup holders. The entry-level model of this BEV has four speakers, and other trims offer up to six.

The MG ES5 has two CATL-made LFP battery options: 40.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh. This crossover comes standard with a 125 kW (168 hp) permanent magnet synchronous electric motor in the rear axle. Depending on the battery variant, the acceleration time from zero to a hundred is 7.7-7.9 seconds. The CLTC range of the MG ES5 is 425 – 525 km.

As the icing on the cake, MG introduced the 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy for the ES5. So, Chinese customers can buy the ES5 at a discount of 20,000 yuan (2,800 USD).
