Hyundai continues with its latest product line overhaul, with the Santa Cruz unibody pickup next in line for improvements. Following the updated Tucson SUV, the Santa Cruz was spotted on public roads, hinting at major updates to keep it competitive with Ford’s Maverick and the Honda Ridgeline.

Curious to learn more? Let’s dig deeper with our exclusive illustration and explore all the expected changes and find out what they mean for Hyundai’s innovative pickup.

Parametric design

Hyundai has given the Santa Cruz a more pronounced, squared-off facial expression that is an evolution of the automaker’s Parametric Design philosophy. Key changes include redesigned bumpers, an artificial skid plate and an updated headlight configuration, with the low-mounted headlights and upper grille featuring new parametric elements, enhancing the vehicle’s futuristic aesthetic.

The grille, now larger and more rectangular, features block-shaped details arranged in meticulous rows, creating a bold front fascia. While the sides remain largely unchanged, the rear sees minimal changes apart from new taillight designs, and all-new wheel patterns will be offered across the range. Furthermore, it is rumored that two new colors will be added: Fine Green Matte and Ultimate Red Metallic, adding to the visual appeal of the car.

A nicer atmosphere

The interior will undergo a complete overhaul, following that of the latest Tucson. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an equally large infotainment system sit in a curved panel and support over-the-air software updates and Hyundai’s BlueLink streaming services.

Other updates include new switchgear, relocated air vents and a modernized center console equipped with a wireless smartphone charger and cup holders. The gear lever has also been moved to the steering column. The interior palette is likely to introduce a new three-tone scheme with shades of green, black and gray.

On the technology front, the Santa Cruz will be packed with features such as Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a Head-Up Display (HUD), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an electronic toll collection system, Digital Key 2 and a fingerprint authentication system. Safety is also expected to be improved to meet stricter IIHS criteria.

Power and thrift

Current powertrain options for the Santa Cruz include a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-four paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Complementing this is a 2.5-liter turbo-four with 281 horsepower, mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is available, while load-sharing rear suspension is standard.

While both units could see some improvements for the new model year, if Hyundai really wants to take on the Ford Maverick, it will have to join the hybrid bandwagon. If the company chooses, hybrid options could include a 1.6 T-GDi hybrid, paired with a 1.49 kWh battery and motor, delivering a combined power of 226 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

The second option could be a more advanced and more expensive plug-in hybrid version, with the same 1.6 T-GDi engine, but with a larger 13.8 kWh battery, achieving a system power of 261 hp and up to 60 kilometers of electric range offers.

Rivals and reveal

Hyundai’s Santa Cruz competes directly with the Maverick, which has become a huge success story for Ford, offering a unique blend of pickup utility and SUV comfort. The 2025 model will likely be available in several trims, including SEL, SEL Activity Package, Night, XRT and Limited, to suit a wide range of preferences.

Hyundai enthusiasts and potential buyers can look forward to the official unveiling in the coming months.
