2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe unveiled with up to 312 hp

BMW unveiled late Tuesday a heavily updated version of the 2-Series Gran Coupe, the compact sedan that first arrived in 2019 as a 2020 model.

The updated version will go on sale in the US next spring and will arrive as a 2025 model. The changes are similar to the updated version of the related 1 Series hatchback that debuted in June and is off-limits to this market.

The front of the 2 Series Gran Coupé has a new look, characterized by slimmer headlights, new grille patterns (as well as the option of an illuminated grille) and a new lower dashboard design. The rear end is also new, with the taillights, lower fascia and exhaust tips also sporting a new design. In the US, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will feature a Standard M Sport exterior design package.

Inside, the updated 2-Series Gran Coupe adopts the more modern cabin design of BMW’s other compact models, including the new 2024 X2 crossover that started sales last year. Atop the dashboard now sits a large display panel with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. There’s also a new center console with additional controls, including a small button for shifting, as opposed to the traditional upright lever.

The infotainment system is powered by Google’s Android operating systemand is easier to use thanks to a QuickSelect function that provides quick access to frequently used functions. As an alternative to the standard navigation map display, it is also possible to display individually configurable images on the infotainment screen.

When it comes to mechanical changes, the emphasis has been on improving handling via increased body rigidity and suspension revisions. These revisions include new adjustable dampers with an additional boot, recalibrated anti-roll bars and a 20% increase in the caster offset of the front wheels.

The The US market will receive the 228 and M235 models. The 228 is offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 making 241 horsepower. The M235 only comes with all-wheel drive, as well as a 2.0-liter turbo-4 rated at up to 312 horsepower. In both cases the transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

BMW estimates that the all-wheel drive 228 will sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in about 5.8 seconds. The M235 only needs 4.7 seconds to achieve the same performance.

Production of the 2 Series Gran Coupé takes place at BMW’s plant in Leipzig, Germany.

The all-wheel drive 228 and the M235 will go on sale in March next year prices start at $42,775 and $50,675respectively. The front-wheel drive 228 will go on sale in mid-2025 and has a starting price of $40,775. All figures include a $1,175 destination charge.
