Maserati’s second-generation GranTurismo coupe is the tin sister car to the GranCabrio, and both cars use the same mixed-metal model platform, which has been developed from the ground up for both open and closed applications – and to accommodate an electric version – from 2017.
Both are large cars by the standards of the two-door GT coupe/convertible class: almost five meters long, while somewhere between 4.7 and 4.9 would be more common. But then you don’t make room for passengers without any stretch.
Unlike the GranTurismo (which is available as a slightly less powerful and cheaper V6 Modena model), the GranCabrio only comes as a 542bhp V6 Trofeo model; or as a more expensive, all-electric Folgore model with three motors and 750 hp. However, all GranCabrios have four-wheel drive and all use air suspension with adaptive damping.
Being a convertible, the GranCabrio Trofeo requires chassis reinforcements that the Folgore can do without (as the drive battery itself adds structural rigidity to the car). Still, it weighs a fairly reasonable 100kg more than an equivalent GranTurismo; although with a driver and fuel on board that will remain very close to two tons.
The appeal of the design is seen as one of the car’s main advantages; and the design of the car’s mechanicals has certainly created a low hood line and an elegant appearance, which accommodates the car’s wide ‘cofango’ clamshell-style hood, as well as Maserati’s use of smoked chrome for the highlights. If you like a colored hood, you can choose between black, blue, gray, ‘greige’ or ‘granata’ red.
